Belief in Your Wings

A Counsel for Students of Islamic Sciences

“A bird perched on a tree branch never fears the branch breaking, for its trust is not in the branch but in its own wings.”

Nature, in its silent vistas, conceals wisdom for humanity that surpasses the profoundest philosophies and the longest books. A small bird, sitting calmly on a slender branch, seems like an ordinary sight, yet upon reflection, it embodies a great lesson of life. The bird knows the branch may be weak, the wind may sway it, and it might break at any moment; yet it remains unafraid, for its confidence lies not in the branch’s strength but in the power of its wings. This trust grants it freedom, peace, and tranquility.

This saying reflects a profound truth about human life. People often attach their happiness, peace, and security to external supports. Some rely on wealth, others on status, some believe in the permanence of people’s love, and others perceive their circumstances as unchanging. Yet, the principle of life is that everything in this world is transient. Wealth can vanish, relationships can break, power can be lost, and situations can change in an instant. If one’s entire trust is placed in these temporary things, they will remain in constant fear, anxiety, and distress. However, those who believe in their abilities, courage, hard work, and their Lord do not fear changing circumstances, for they know that even if one support is lost, they have the strength to soar again.

The roots of this saying can be found in ancient Eastern philosophy, particularly Taoism. The great thinker Zhuangzi often used nature’s phenomena as examples for human life in his teachings. In his tales, a woodcutter cuts trees with such skill as if he understands the language of nature. He suggests that humans should live in harmony with the flow of nature. In this philosophy, the example of a bird sitting confidently on a branch is given. This confidence stems from the belief that the universe will support it, and even if the branch breaks, its wings will prevent it from falling. In Taoism, this is called “Wu Wei,” meaning harmony with nature’s flow and spontaneous living.

This concept is also found in Buddhist teachings. Buddhist philosophy teaches living in the present, accepting change, and being free from fear. The bird is neither trapped in the fears of the past nor worried about the future. It lives only in the present moment, feeling the coolness of the air, swaying with the tree’s movement, and gazing at the vastness of the sky.

This state is the path to peace for humans as well. Most of humanity’s worries arise from things that have not yet occurred. They ruin their present with fears of tomorrow. The bird teaches us that a life free from fear is only possible when one focuses on the present and believes in their inner strength.

In the Western world, this saying has also gained immense popularity. Modern psychologists, spiritual teachers, and authors consider it a symbol of self-confidence and mental peace. They assert that true power in life lies not in external supports but within oneself. If a person recognizes their inner capabilities, they can face any challenge. This is why this saying is repeatedly cited in discussions on personal development, leadership, motivation, and spiritual training.

The various interpretations of this saying further deepen its meaning. Some say the bird’s trust is not just in the branch but in its wings, which is the essence of self-reliance. Humans, too, should not completely depend on others’ supports but should strengthen their willpower. Another interpretation is that the bird does not get lost in planning its flight but enjoys the view. This teaches humans that life is not just about reaching a destination but also about appreciating the beauty of the journey.

Some thinkers consider this example a symbol of the relationship between humans and the universe. According to them, the branch represents the universe or God’s mercy, while the bird symbolizes humans. When a person trusts their Creator, fear begins to diminish in their heart. They then accept life’s challenges as tests, knowing that every dark night is followed by a dawn.

If this wisdom is adopted in practical life, it can bring remarkable changes in a person’s character. First, one must develop self-confidence. Instead of fearing failure, one should cultivate the courage to learn from it. Those who stop walking out of fear of falling never reach their destination. Successful people are those who continue their flight despite breaking branches.

Another important point is that one should abandon the desire to control everything completely. Life does not always go according to one’s wishes. Sometimes, doors we wish to remain open close. But these closed doors show new paths. If the bird remains in constant fear of the branch breaking, it would never enjoy the flight. Similarly, if a person remains trapped in constant fear and worries, they will miss the beauty of life.

This saying is especially important for the younger generation. Today’s youth face intense competition, an uncertain future, and societal pressures. The fear of failure, comparison with others, and the race for constant success are robbing mental peace. In such circumstances, this saying becomes a beacon of hope and courage. It reminds the youth that true strength lies within them. If they strengthen the wings of knowledge, effort, character, and faith, no broken branch in the world can bring them down.

In the tiny bird of nature lies a great lesson for humanity. It teaches us that peace in life is attained when one’s trust is not in the transient things of the world but in their inner strength. Fear always arises in a heart that relies on weak supports, while certainty is the light that guides one through every darkness.

It can be said that a person’s true strength lies not outside but within. Circumstances change, supports break, paths close, but one who has the wings of certainty can always soar to new heights. Just like the bird that does not fear the branch breaking, for it trusts in its wings.

In today’s era, one of the greatest challenges for students is “comparison.” Social media constantly displays people’s apparent successes before our eyes. A student becomes anxious seeing another’s fame, feels inferior seeing someone’s financial comfort, and considers themselves a failure seeing another’s popularity. This mindset weakens the spirit.

Remember, the true measure of religious knowledge is not fame but acceptance. Many have passed whom the world knew little of, yet their status was elevated in the heavens. And many were famous in the world, yet their knowledge lacked blessing. Therefore, focus not on people’s opinions but on Allah’s pleasure.

A student must also understand that knowledge is not merely the accumulation of information. True knowledge instills fear of Allah, humility, patience, and compassion. If knowledge increases arrogance, envy, impatience, or the desire for fame, it loses its essence. True knowledge brings one closer to Allah and benefits creation.

A true student is like a tree that silently bears fruit. It does not make noise, does not boast, but benefits others through its actions. Such people may initially be overlooked, but over time, their impact remains.

If ever you feel that circumstances are against you, resources are scarce, people are not supportive, or the future seems bleak, do not despair. This is merely the branches swaying. Remember your wings. Strengthen your faith, deepen your knowledge, refine your character, increase your prayers, and fortify your connection with Allah. Then you will see that a strength will arise within you that will free you from every fear.

In the tiny bird of nature lies a great lesson for students of knowledge: supports change, circumstances change, but one who trusts in their Lord and strengthens their inner wings never falls to the ground.

زندگی کا خلاصہ اور اللہ سے تعلق

In the end, this is the essence of life: do not rely on the strength of the branches, but have faith in the power of your wings; and seek the true strength of your wings in your connection with Allah Almighty.
