Reminder: The dominion of the world and all that it contains is but a disgrace to me

Character and EthicsSpirituality

A single glorification from my lips can fill the space between heaven and earth, and a single praise can fill the Scale; and both increase in light and splendour in the month of Ramadan, when lights are multiplied, souls are refined, and bodies grow lighter so that hearts may ascend. How exalted is my rank when I am granted the grace to remember my Lord, and how precious my worth when He honours me with nearness to Him, though I was but a frail servant, possessing for myself neither benefit nor harm.
Whoever has tasted this station finds the world diminished in his sight, and its adornments trivial, for he has perceived what endures and so has renounced what perishes. How can one boast of a fading sovereignty who knows that a single sincere word may raise him in degrees before the Lord of all worlds? How can he incline towards a passing shadow when the sun of certitude has risen within his heart? Indeed, it is fitting that the angels should envy a servant whose tongue is alive with remembrance, whose heart is sustained by vigilance, and whose inner being is adorned with sincerity.
How blessed is the one whose tongue never tires of the remembrance of God, and how fortunate the one who shields his soul from sin, who strives against his caprice and overcomes it, who resists his desire and thereby allows his spirit to soar. Such a one has come to know that the sweetness of obedience endures beyond every pleasure, that the purity of the heart surpasses every refinement, and that nearness to God is the only true sovereignty, a light that does not fade, and a bliss that does not come to an end.
