Belief in Your Own Wings

A Counsel to Students of Islamic Sciences

“A bird perched on a tree branch never fears the branch breaking, for its trust is not in the branch but in its own wings.”

Nature, in its silent vistas, conceals wisdom for humanity that surpasses the grandest philosophies and the longest tomes. A small bird, serenely settled on a slender tree branch, seems an ordinary sight. Yet, upon reflection, this scene encapsulates a profound lesson of life. The bird knows the branch may be frail, the wind might sway it, and it could break at any moment; still, it remains unafraid, for its confidence lies not in the branch’s strength but in the power of its wings. This trust grants it freedom, peace, and tranquility.

This saying reflects a deep truth about human life. Often, people tie their happiness, peace, and security to external supports. Some rely on wealth, others on status, some believe in the permanence of love, and others assume their circumstances will remain unchanged. Yet, the principle of life is that everything in this world is transient. Wealth can vanish, relationships can break, power can be stripped away, and situations can change in an instant. If a person’s entire trust is in these temporary things, they will live in constant fear, anxiety, and unrest. But those who believe in their abilities, courage, effort, and their Lord do not fear changing circumstances, for they know that even if one support is lost, they have the strength to soar again.

The roots of this saying can be traced to ancient Eastern philosophy, particularly Taoism. The great Taoist thinker Zhuangzi frequently used nature’s phenomena as metaphors for human life in his teachings. In his tales, a woodcutter cuts trees with such skill as if he understands the language of nature. He says that humans should live in harmony with the flow of nature. In this philosophy, the example of a bird is given, sitting contentedly on a branch. This contentment stems from the belief that the universe will support it, and even if the branch breaks, its wings will prevent it from falling. In Taoism, this is called “Wu Wei,” meaning harmony with nature’s flow and spontaneous living.

This concept is also found in Buddhist teachings. Buddhist philosophy teaches living in the present, accepting change, and being free from fear. The bird is neither trapped in the fears of the past nor worried about the future. It lives only in the present moment, feeling the coolness of the wind, swaying with the tree’s movement, and gazing at the vastness of the sky.

This state is the path to peace for humans as well. Most human worries arise from things that have not yet happened. They ruin their present in the fears of tomorrow. The bird teaches us that a life free from fear is only possible when one focuses on the present and believes in their inner strength.

In the Western world, this saying has gained immense popularity. Modern psychologists, spiritual teachers, and authors consider it a symbol of self-confidence and mental peace. According to them, true power in life does not lie in external supports but within a person. If one recognizes their inner abilities, they can face any difficulty. This is why this saying is repeatedly mentioned in discussions on personal development, leadership, motivation, and spiritual training.

The various interpretations of this saying deepen its meaning. Some say that the bird’s trust is not just in the branch but in its wings, which is the essence of self-reliance. Humans should also strengthen their willpower instead of completely relying on others. Another interpretation is that the bird does not get lost in planning its flight but enjoys the scenery. This teaches humans that life is not just about reaching a destination but also about appreciating the beauty of the journey.

Some thinkers consider this example a symbol of the relationship between humans and the universe. According to them, the branch represents the universe or God’s mercy, while the bird symbolizes humans. When humans trust their Creator, their fear diminishes. They accept life’s challenges as tests, knowing that every dark night is followed by dawn.

If this wisdom is adopted in practical life, it can bring remarkable changes in a person’s character. First, one must develop self-confidence. Instead of fearing failure, one should have the courage to learn from it. Those who stop walking out of fear of falling never reach their destination. Successful people are those who continue their flight despite breaking branches.

Secondly, one must abandon the desire to control everything completely. Life does not always go according to one’s wishes. Sometimes, doors we want to remain open close. But these closed doors show us new paths. If the bird constantly feared the branch breaking, it would never enjoy the flight. Similarly, if humans remain trapped in constant fear and anxiety, they will miss life’s beauty.

This saying is particularly important for the younger generation. Today’s youth face intense competition, an uncertain future, and societal pressure. The fear of failure, comparison with others, and the race for constant success are robbing them of mental peace. In such circumstances, this saying becomes a beacon of hope and courage. It reminds young people that true strength lies within them. If they strengthen the wings of knowledge, effort, character, and faith, no broken branch in the world can bring them down.

In nature’s small bird lies a great lesson for humanity. It teaches us that peace in life is attained when one’s trust is not in the world’s fleeting things but in their inner strength. Fear arises in a heart built on weak supports, while certainty is the light that guides one through every darkness.

It can be said that a person’s true strength is not outside but within. Circumstances change, supports break, paths close, but the one with wings of certainty can always soar to new heights. Just like the bird that does not fear the branch breaking, for it trusts in its wings.

In today’s world, another significant challenge for students is “comparison.” Social media constantly displays people’s apparent successes. A student becomes anxious seeing another’s fame, feels inferior seeing someone’s financial comfort, and considers themselves a failure seeing another’s popularity. This mindset weakens the soul.

Remember, the true measure of religious knowledge is not fame but acceptance. Many have passed whom the world knew little of, yet their status was elevated in the heavens. And many were famous in the world, but their knowledge lacked blessing. Therefore, focus not on people’s opinions but on seeking Allah’s pleasure.

A student should also understand that knowledge is not merely the accumulation of information. True knowledge instills fear of God, humility, patience, and mercy within a person. If knowledge increases arrogance, envy, impatience, or the desire for fame, it loses its essence. True knowledge brings one closer to Allah and benefits creation.

A true student is like a tree that quietly bears fruit. It does not make noise or boast of itself but benefits others through its actions. Such individuals may initially be overlooked, but over time, their impact endures.

If ever you feel that circumstances are against you, resources are scarce, people are not supportive, or the future seems bleak, do not despair. This is merely the branches swaying. Remember your wings. Strengthen your faith, deepen your knowledge, refine your character, increase your prayers, and fortify your connection with Allah. Then you will see a power within you that will free you from all fear.

In nature’s small bird lies a great lesson for students: supports change, circumstances change, but those who trust in their Lord and strengthen their inner wings never fall to the ground.

زندگی کا خلاصہ

In the end, this is the essence of life: do not rely on the strength of the branches, but have faith in the power of your wings; and seek the true strength of your wings in your connection with Allah Almighty.
