A Scholarly Gathering in Cambridge
By the grace of Allah, today I delivered an extensive academic lesson on
“al-Sīrah al-Nabawiyyah” as part of the programmes of Cambridge Islamic
College. The session ran from ten in the morning until six in the evening and was attended by a distinguished group of students of knowledge and researchers, both men and women. Studying the sīrah is not a mere recounting of past events; rather, it is a constantly renewed fountain of guidance and a radiant beacon that illuminates life’s pathways. It shines with the light of the prophets who came bearing the flood of divine revelation, conveying an eternal message that rectifies human life in both this world and the hereafter, far surpassing the limited intellectual efforts of reason, which on their own remain deficient in grasping the profound truths of existence.
During the lesson, I addressed significant methodological and epistemological issues, foremost among them the superiority of the prophets, peace be upon them, over philosophers and proponents of mere rational thought, emphasising that the prophets came with divine revelation and comprehensive guidance that perfects human life in this world and the next. In contrast, the philosophers’ intellectual endeavours fall short of comprehending the ultimate realities. I also stressed the necessity of studying the sīrah with a holistic, integrated approach, recognising it as an interconnected network of events, rulings, educational, social, political, and spiritual moments, which must not be separated from one another. They come together to form a balanced way of life suitable for both the individual and society in facing contemporary challenges. At the conclusion of the lesson, a fruitful scholarly discussion ensued, during which attendees expressed their appreciation for the subject and their desire to delve deeper into the study of the sīrah with this comprehensive
methodology. We ask Allah to bless this effort, make it sincere for His sake, and cause it to benefit the Ummah.
The joy of the gathering was further increased by the attendance of the
esteemed Shaykh Dr Khalil Ibrahim Kutlay, may Allah preserve him, one of
Turkey’s distinguished scholars known for their balanced, moderate approach and efforts in serving the noble Prophetic traditions and calling to Allah. He was accompanied by a delegation of his students and companions, among whom was our dear friend Dr Abdul Latif, whose presence and scholarly contributions delighted me greatly. The visit of Shaykh Dr Khalil Ibrahim provided an opportunity to strengthen bonds of scholarly and daʿwah brotherhood and to exchange perspectives
among scholars and researchers from different countries, thereby enriching the gathering and lending it a noble spirit, making this day a significant milestone in the service of sacred knowledge.
Shaykh Dr Khalil Ibrahim Kutlay is well known in the Muslim world. He graduated from Umm al-Qura University in Makkah and was among the students of the late Shaykh Muhammad Amin Siraj, the godly scholar renowned for his steadfastness upon the correct methodology and his dedication to nurturing generations. He currently serves as a professor of Prophetic Hadith at Sultan Muhammad al-Fatih Waqf University in Istanbul, which is among the leading institutions of Islamic sciences.
I had the honour of meeting the esteemed Shaykh several years ago in Istanbul at the home of the venerable ʿAllāmah Muhammad Amin Siraj, may Allah have mercy upon him. That encounter was among the most important scholarly and spiritual moments that bind the scholars of the East and West, strengthening the bonds of love and brotherhood among the people of knowledge. During that meeting, Shaykh Khalil Ibrahim expressed his appreciation for my books and academic articles, which he follows with interest, a gesture that delighted and encouraged me, for it showed me that sincere words can cross borders, spreading knowledge and affirming correct concepts within the Ummah.
We also exchanged valuable advice about the importance of continuing to write and author works on topics related to the sīrah, the Sunnah, and Islamic thought, agreeing that this is a great responsibility requiring sincerity and devotion.
In him, I found the embodiment of a true scholar who combines abundant knowledge with humility and noble character. His knowledge serves as a bridge for bringing hearts together, and the radiance of his face is a testament to his excellent manners; he listens with wisdom and humbles himself before all, exemplifying the model of the godly scholar who transforms knowledge into practical conduct worthy of emulation. I was keen to seize the opportunity of his presence to have him address my students with some guiding words, but time constraints and his commitments prevented it. Nevertheless, he kindly promised to continue communication and cooperation in serving knowledge and daʿwah, strengthening love for scholars and encouraging emulation of them among future generations.
By Allah’s grace, the meeting was blessed, filled with a spirit of fraternal scholarship reflecting the eagerness of scholars and students to cooperate for the good of the Ummah and the flourishing of sacred knowledge. We ask Allah to reward everyone who participated with the best of rewards, to bless Shaykh Dr Khalil Ibrahim and his companions, grant them health and well-being, and place their efforts in the scale of their good deeds on the Day of Judgement. Indeed, gatherings like these serve as beacons that illuminate the paths of knowledge and daʿwah and lay down bridges of cooperation among scholars and researchers everywhere. May Allah bless everyone involved and safeguard our Ummah through its scholars and righteous deeds.
The esteemed Shaykh Dr Khalil Ibrahim Kutlay stands out among Turkey’s foremost scholars in the field of Prophetic Hadith and balanced Islamic daʿwah. He acquired his traditional sciences from the best institutions and studied under senior scholars such as Shaykh Muhammad Amin Siraj, who had a profound influence in shaping his intellectual and educational methodology. Shaykh Khalil Ibrahim is distinguished by his combination of precise knowledge with a moderate, balanced methodology that advocates for moderation and equilibrium in understanding religion and engaging with contemporary issues. Throughout his scholarly journey, he has shown a keen dedication to serving the noble Hadith and disseminating it in ways that help Muslims understand the life of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم with a methodology combining authenticity and modern relevance.
In addition to his academic role at Sultan Muhammad al-Fatih Waqf University, he oversees a number of educational and daʿwah programmes and participates in conferences and scholarly symposia, making him a link between the rich Islamic heritage and the contemporary Muslim reality. His lectures are marked by a sound and accessible scholarly style, combining depth of knowledge with clarity of presentation, inspiring listeners and encouraging them to love knowledge and follow the example of the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم. He is keen to develop daʿwah and intellectual awareness within society, emphasising the importance of writing and authoring on issues facing the Ummah, particularly in the fields of sīrah, Sunnah, and Islamic thought.
Moreover, the Shaykh enjoys widespread respect both within Turkey and abroad, representing the model of a working scholar characterised by humility and excellent conduct, maintaining close contact with students of knowledge and daʿwah workers, and supporting collaborative efforts to serve Islam and spread its noble values. This combination of knowledge, action, and character makes Shaykh Dr Khalil Ibrahim Kutlay an exemplary figure at a time when the Ummah desperately needs scholars who can unite authenticity with contemporary relevance, connecting our great heritage with the needs of the modern age.
As we conclude this blessed gathering, we stand at the threshold of knowledge, feeling the grandeur of the sīrah, asking Allah to make it a guiding light in our lives, leading us towards true faith, righteous deeds, and profound humility. Let us strive to be true heirs of the noble Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم, preserving his sīrah, living it, and conveying it with sincerity and integrity so that its light continues to shine through the darkness of time.
We ask Allah to grant us success in what He loves and is pleased with, to make our deeds sincere for His noble countenance, and to gather us in the highest paradise with the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous—what an excellent company they are. Āmīn.
