Introduction
Praise and Salutations
All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds, and the best blessings and peace upon our master Muhammad, the trustworthy and truthful, the seal of the prophets and leader of the messengers, and upon his pure family, noble companions, and those who follow them with righteousness until the Day of Judgment.
Purpose of this Introduction
It brings me immense pleasure to present the book of my esteemed friend and colleague, Maulana Mujahid Askar Ali, who stands among the foremost contemporary scholars in Britain. His journey in both knowledge and literature has been exemplary, merging intellectual depth with refined character, securing him a revered status among his peers and students. His distinction is not limited to his scholarly achievements alone but is accentuated by his luminous personality, humility, generosity, kindness, balance, and gentle nature.
Relationship with His Teachers
Maulana Mujahid’s relationship with his teachers serves as a model in respect, deep love, and profound appreciation. This connection reflects the fullness of his scientific and ethical character, embodying the highest values of sincerity and dedication. His teachers were not just instructors but exemplars in thought and behavior. They instilled noble values in him, nurturing a love for knowledge and a commitment to it. His sessions with them illuminated his life, maturing his intellect and purifying his spirit.
Dedication to Honoring His Teachers
Out of deep love and gratitude for his teachers, Maulana Mujahid decided to immortalize their memory, expressing his loyalty to them. Throughout his years of teaching at Ibrahim College in and other institutions, he did not merely discuss the scholarly aspects of his teachers but also shared stories of their character and virtues, illustrating the profound impact they had on his life. When one of his teachers passed away, he would speak of them with goodness to his students, recounting their virtues and the significant influence they had on him.
Preserving and Sharing Their Legacy
As the years passed, Maulana Mujahid sought to share these stories and insights with a broader audience, allowing students and lovers of knowledge to glimpse aspects of their lives. In this book, he writes about the scholars from whom he received his knowledge and training in Dewsbury, Britain, and in the Levant, where he spent part of his life in pursuit of knowledge. I, too, share a connection with several of these esteemed teachers, strengthening the bond between us and enhancing our brotherhood in scholarship.
Honoring Sheikh Muhammad Yunus Al-Jawnpuri
Among the scholars he writes about is our esteemed teacher, Sheikh Muhammad Yunus Al-Jawnpuri, may Allah have mercy on him, who had a profound impact on his scholarly formation. Maulana Mujahid describes him with words that reflect genuine appreciation, saying: “His explanations were concise yet comprehensive, and he retained the sayings of earlier scholars by heart. Often, he would quote Ibn Hajar’s ‘Fath al-Bari,’ expressing much approval and occasionally offering gentle critique. Finally, the Sheikh advised students of knowledge to study the books of hadith and literature from all scholars and narrators. Then he granted the attendees a general permission by saying: ‘I grant permission for all my narrations, under the conditions observed by the scholars of hadith.’”
Literary Style and Passion for Teaching
Maulana Mujahid’s writing style is marked by a literary touch that provides an enjoyable experience for readers. His command over Arabic, including its elegant and refined literary styles, is evident. His writing is characterized by beauty of expression, sensitivity, and precision in conveying meaning.
Through his biographies of his teachers, he reveals his deep appreciation for Arabic literature and his commitment to teaching it to his students. He writes:
“I was then teaching Arabic literature. The Sheikh summoned me, and I explained that I divided the material into poetry and prose. I would first teach literary texts containing short stories, assigning questions from these texts as homework, requiring answers in Arabic. I also required students to memorize fifty lines of poetry, fifty Arabic proverbs, and twenty sayings from the pious predecessors. They also read a book by Kamil Kilani, discussing it in Arabic. In the second year, they read selections from various texts I chose, including ‘Qisas al-Arab,’ ‘Al-Kitab al-Asasi,’ ‘Nafhat al-Arab,’ and others.”
Goal of the Book
Through this book, Maulana Mujahid aims to revive the legacy of his teachers and share their knowledge with anyone seeking the path of learning. His work serves as a beacon for students, inspiring them to emulate the example of those who came before them. We ask Allah to benefit students and readers alike and to reward him for the effort he has devoted to this work.
