The Purpose of the Quran and Using Intellect to Understand It

  1. Allah’s Book and Its Authenticity:Surat As-Sajdah emphasizes that the Quran is sent by Allah; no human, angel, or prophet has interfered with it.“This is the revelation of the Book in which there is no doubt, from the Lord of the worlds.” [Surat As-Sajdah: 32:2]

Jews and Makkans acknowledged its eloquence but rejected its divine origin.

Belief in the Quran stems from accepting it is from Allah, not just admiring its eloquence.

  2. Purpose Over Praise:Allah doesn’t want praise for the Quran; He wants us to benefit from it.“This is a blessed Book We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded.” [Surat Sad: 38:29]

Examples of Intellectual Engagement with the Quran

  1. Surat As-Saffat – The Argument Between Leaders and Followers:“By Allah, we were certainly in clear error. When we equated you with the Lord of the worlds.” [Surat As-Saffat: 37:95-96]Shaytan’s tactics of attacking from all directions relate to this argument.
  2. Surat Al-Alaq – “Wasjud”:“Prostrate and draw near [to Allah].” [Surat Al-Alaq: 96:19]Yusuf’s brothers prostrated to Allah in gratitude, as seen in:

“And he raised his parents upon the throne, and they bowed to Allah for him.” [Surat Yusuf: 12:100]

  3. Allah’s Responses:“They ask you about the crescent moons.” [Surat Al-Baqarah: 2:189]The teaching of Prophet Adam likely refers to the names of pious descendants:

“And He taught Adam the names—all of them.” [Surat Al-Baqarah: 2:31]

  4. Surat Abasa – “He Frowned”:“He frowned and turned away.” [Surat Abasa: 80:1]Walid ibn Mugheerah is a more fitting interpretation as the one who frowned.
  5. Surat Ikhlas:“Say, ‘The truth is: Allah is One.’” [Surat Al-Ikhlas: 112:1]

Practical Lessons from the Quran

  1. Effort and Tawakkul:Maryam shaking the tree:“And shake the trunk of the palm tree toward you; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates.” [Surat Maryam: 19:25]

Love and Care in the Quran

  1. Rabb and His Concern for Us:“The revelation of the Book is from Allah, the Almighty, the Wise.” [Surat Az-Zumar: 39:1]
  2. Direct Communication with Allah:“And they did not differ except after knowledge had come to them—out of jealous animosity among themselves.” [Surat Ash-Shura: 42:14]

Final Reflection

Ask Allah for everything, no matter how small. The Quran is a guide for life, a reminder of Allah’s love, and a call to rely solely on Him. Use your intellect, strive with effort, and trust in His plan.
