Question:
What’s the protocol if you attend the mosque to pray and there’s a janazah going on?

Answer:
When one enters the mosque with the intention to perform ṣalāh and finds that a janāzah prayer is taking place or about to commence, the appropriate course of action depends upon the timing and circumstances. The jurists clarify that fulfilling the obligation of the regular prayers and participating in the funeral prayer are both praiseworthy acts, yet they differ in their nature and urgency.

If there is sufficient time before the janāzah prayer begins, meaning one can complete the prescribed prayer without missing the funeral prayer, then it is recommended to first perform one’s obligatory (or intended) prayer. Thereafter, one should join the congregation for the janāzah, provided it has not yet concluded. In this way, the worshipper preserves the proper order and punctuality of ṣalāh whilst still attaining the reward of attending the funeral prayer.

However, if the janāzah prayer is about to start and it is reasonably feared that by beginning one’s own prayer the funeral prayer will be completed before one can join, then it is preferable to participate in the janāzah first. The funeral prayer is brief and time-sensitive; once completed, it cannot be repeated with the congregation. Following participation in the funeral prayer, the worshipper should then perform his or her own ṣalāh.
